The Archbishop of Canterbury has in effect announced that God has abdicated his responsibility for the universe.
Speaking yesterday, he said just as God gave humans free will to do "immeasurable damage" to themselves as individuals it seemed "clear" they had the same "terrible freedom" as a human race.
"I think that to suggest that God might intervene to protect us from the corporate folly of our practices is as unchristian and unbiblical as to suggest that he protects us from the results of our individual folly or sin," he said.
So there we have it from the man who knows more about God than anyone else. He is the leader of the worldwide Anglican community and so he must know.
God will not save the innocent from the effects of global warming, and that comes straight from the horse’s mouth. It is no use praying for help from God – he’s abdicated.

We welcome lively and challenging comments. However, please try to stay on topic, be polite and do not use abusive, racist or sexist language, and do not incite your readers to violence or other antisocial behaviour, or your comment will be deleted. This isn't censorship: it's a case of staying within the bounds of decency and having an eye to the law, although we realise the law will be different in different countries.
We do not bar anonymous comments at the moment, but we would prefer that those commenting play fair and use their name or at least a regular nom de plume. It does show a confidence in your convictions. We know, too, that it's easy to use a false name and be effectively anonymous, but, again, we appeal to your sense of good practice. Even a wacky nom de plume is better, since at least readers will come to know that contributor and maybe remember her or his previous comments.
Blatant commercial advertising will be removed.

It's Gays v Muslims as the Rainbow Alliance falls apart
ReplyDeleteWhat a strange comment precedes this one. Is it anti-gay and anti-Muslim, pro-gay and pro-Muslim, or any combination of these? Anyway, don't assume that all gay people fell for all that limp-Left Rainbow Alliance crap. Most of us didn't.
ReplyDeleteRainbow Alliance politics was a sad attempt by the obsolete Left to knit together a socialist constituency of the disgruntled and mutually antagonistic. Muslims, gays, blacks, feminists, Irish Republicans, peaceniks, greens and militant Trade Unionists DO NOT an alliance make!
The secret is not for gays to make bogus alliances with Muslims, but to find a way of co-existing with them, allowing them the freedom to practise their religion in the private sphere, while insisting that the public sphere remains a vigorously secular and safe space for gay people and others who might feel intimidated by the always joyless, sometimes violently hysterical, Islamists.
The challenge now is to make alliances based on a shared commitment to the secular public sphere, social reciprocity, democracy, equality of opportunity, freedom of expression and a balance of the individual's sovereign rights and obligations.
We are so over the rainbow.
