Pink News tells us that a geezer in Wyoming who painted “Leviticus 20: 13, to be gay = death” on his fence won’t be prosecuted because he’s not breaking the law.
Maybe he isn’t, but it makes you wonder whether there’d be a different outcry if he left the biblical reference out. Is he being more tolerated because he’s quoting the Bible?
The biblical verse referred to does say that men who lie with men as with women should be put to death, not merely that they’ll die of old age or exhaustion – or both. So you could argue that this is some kind of incitement.
If he just said, “The Bible says to be gay is wrong” or whatever, then we could hardly argue – with his daubing it, that is, not the sentiment itself, which is clearly barmy. He may be a nutter, but part of our tolerant society is that we tolerate nutters – until they begin to threaten the freedom and safety of others.

This isn't censorship: it's a case of staying within the bounds of decency and having an eye to the law, although we realise the law will be different in different countries.
We do not bar anonymous comments at the moment, but we would prefer that those commenting play fair and use their name or at least a regular nom de plume. It does show a confidence in your convictions. We know, too, that it's easy to use a false name and be effectively anonymous, but, again, we appeal to your sense of good practice. Even a wacky nom de plume is better, since at least readers will come to know that contributor and maybe remember her or his previous comments.

Andy, you're doin' a great job here and this story proves to me that the bible is, indeed, hate speech—But the only way it's powerful is if people think the god is real. If he were quoting a line out of a Salinger novel he'd be laughed off as if he were some nutcase and, if it were viewed as hateful in the context of his expression of it, the police would be by. But since it's his fucking god, his precious fucking Christ advocating this bullshit, it's his untouchable religious freedom at stake. The sentiment, the vague suggestion of violence here, is still present, but it's OK because a magical sky daddy from 2,000 years ago jerked off on a virgin. See? That's respect. He's not breaking any laws or inciting anyone or libelling anyone as far as I can see, so, although he's a pain in the arse, I won't remove his stuff (let's all have a laugh!), but God knows what he's rabbiting on about!
