Some sensible Catholics

Gay Catholics have welcomed the decisions of the UK’s Charity Commissioners and the Charities Tribunal to refuse three Catholic adoption agencies permission to change their charitable objects in order to be able to refuse gay couples, says the Christian think tank Ekklesia.

Their story continues:

Commenting on the recent rejection of appeals by agencies in Birmingham and Leeds (Westminster did not appeal), a spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Caucus of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement in the UK said: “These agencies were seeking to exclude all lesbian, gay and bisexual people from the ambit of their services, including those who choose to live their lives celibately in strict accordance with Catholic church teaching.”

The Caucus made a formal objection to the attempts by Catholic agencies to avoid the law on discrimination, arguing that such a stance was contrary to the values of the Church and the Christian faith.

I still can’t get my head round the idea that any gay person would choose Catholicism – or, for that matter, any religious organisation that treats gays the way the Catholic Church and the Church of England do – but there you go.

    Gay Catholics are deluded if they think that Catholicism and being a practising homosexual go hand-in-hand. It's one of the few "sins" in the Bible that is unequivocally insisted upon in the Old and New Testaments. If you embrace, or continue to adhere to Catholicism, do the decent thing and give up your gay sex life! Or even better, swap Catholicism for Secular Humanism and enjoy your gay sex life within a healthy, responsible and supportive environment!

    As for adoption by gay couples, it is not the sexuality of the adoptive parents that counts - it is their parenting skills and whether or not they can offer a secure, stable and loving home in which to raise a child.
    The rights of the child do indeed come first, but those rights include the right not to miss out on being adopted just because the couple offering to raise them and provide for them just happens to be homosexual.
    Some gays would be unsuitable, obviously, but some heterosexuals are also unsuited (technically, the Catholic Church would have supported an application by Fred & Rosemary West - a married heterosexual couple - whilst turning down any number of same sex couples simply for being gay. Bonkers!

This isn't censorship: it's a case of staying within the bounds of decency and having an eye to the law, although we realise the law will be different in different countries.

We do not bar anonymous comments at the moment, but we would prefer that those commenting play fair and use their name or at least a regular nom de plume. It does show a confidence in your convictions. We know, too, that it's easy to use a false name and be effectively anonymous, but, again, we appeal to your sense of good practice. Even a wacky nom de plume is better, since at least readers will come to know that contributor and maybe remember her or his previous comments.
