An Irish cardinal reckons it’s religious parents’ right to have religion pumped into their kids at schools that are maintained at taxpayers’ expense, according to the Irish Times.
“The Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland [Seán Brady] said parents had a right to have their children educated in accordance with their philosophical and religious convictions,” says the story, “and the State had a duty to support this with public funds.”
Oh, yes? And how does this berk work that out? He seems to be just stating it, hoping that people will take it as fact.
He’s quoted as saying, “Those parents who choose and value the Catholic education provided for their children are taxpayers in exactly the same way as parents who send their children to other types of schools. To disadvantage any group of parents because of their faith is completely contrary to the principle of equality and pluralism”
So gay parents should expect a good dollop of same-sex-relationships education, then, because they, too, are taxpayers? I don’t think this deluded idiot would support that, somehow.

We welcome lively and challenging comments. However, please try to stay on topic, be polite and do not use abusive, racist or sexist language, and do not incite your readers to violence or other antisocial behaviour, or your comment will be deleted. This isn't censorship: it's a case of staying within the bounds of decency and having an eye to the law, although we realise the law will be different in different countries.
We do not bar anonymous comments at the moment, but we would prefer that those commenting play fair and use their name or at least a regular nom de plume. It does show a confidence in your convictions. We know, too, that it's easy to use a false name and be effectively anonymous, but, again, we appeal to your sense of good practice. Even a wacky nom de plume is better, since at least readers will come to know that contributor and maybe remember her or his previous comments.
Blatant commercial advertising will be removed.

Reminds me of the school voucher idiots here in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteI did 12 years in Catholic schools and am none the worse for the wear. That said, none of my education was publicly subsidized with the exception of school books in grades 1 through 8.
