Up to our necks in sharia

It’s reported today that there are now 85 sharia courts in Britain.

This is 17 times higher than previously accepted, says a Daily Mail story.

OK, we know they’re not legally recognised and any judgments have to be ratified. But that, apparently, is easily done, and it’s women who lose out, because Islamic law belongs in the Dark Ages and doesn’t give a toss about human dignity and equality.

“The spread of sharia law has become increasingly controversial since its role was backed last year by Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams and Lord Phillips, the Lord Chief Justice, who stepped down last October,” says the Mail, citing a study by an Islam specialist, Denis MacEoin. The story continues:

The report added: “The fact that so many sharia rulings in Britain relate to cases concerning divorce and custody of children is of particular concern, as women are not equal in sharia law, and sharia contains no specific commitment to the best interests of the child that is fundamental to family law in the UK.

“Under sharia, a male child belongs to the father after the age of seven, regardless of circumstances.”

It said: “Sharia courts operating in Britain may be handing down rulings that are inappropriate to this country because they are linked to elements in Islamic law that are seriously out of step with trends in Western legislation.”

More appeasing and kowtowing by our politicians, who ought to be stamping this evil out, and insisting that all disputes that require a decision that will have legal status be begun and ended in proper courts, not imported kangaroo courts run for invisible sky fairies and ancient scriptures rather than real people, living now, in this country, facing 21st-century problems.

It's important that we in Britain resist Sharia law for precisely the reasons this post outlines. Weak-minded folk like the Arch Bishop, Dr Rowan Williams, and Lord Phillips, the former Lord Chief Justice, are fatalists - we CAN stop the social and legal creep of reactionary Sharia law, but only if we have the political will to do so.
We need courageous politicians who will stand up and say to Muslims, that like Sikhs, Hindus, Jews and other more successfully assimilated groups, they are welcome to come alongside and be part of our society, but that carries with it an obligation to participate and integrate on our terms - not shut themselves off in a parallel and antagonistic ghetto, unwilling to engage with wider British society.
This necessarily involves some sacrifices and considerable efforts to adapt to the ways and expectations of the host community among whom they have chosen to live. They should accommodate OUR ways, not the other way round.

with all due respects to everyone concerned...

am a muslim & proud to be one. i am also an indian & proud yet again. all this Shariah bashing that the western media is doing is of no use absoultely. it is really very sad that a so called "civilised society" like the west, keeps accusing islam, muslims and anything realted to islam even by light years of being intolerant towards women, peace, etc.
You 'western' ppl must open up... plz dont be narrow-minded. you ppl know ONLY nothing about islam.

having mentioned the words woman & peace... lemme tell you this...

ISLAM - Literally means Peace.
WOMEN - The Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, said, "Everytime a Girl Child is born, it is a Blessing for the entire house"

BUT. Sadly you ppl will never understand his (peace be upon him) Words. coz you are meant to be that way.

and before i finish... i was not deep into Islam until a few years ago myself... But all the "Islam-Bashing" the Western media resorted to post 9/11, made me curious to Learn & Know about My Own Religion. (smirks) actually, i wud say, carry on the work that you ppl are used to. it is always a win-win situation for Muslims. Praise Be To Allah Who Made Me A Muslim.

n by the way... Islam is NOT a Religion. Islam, IS A Way of LIFE.

May Allah Show you all the right Path. Ameen.

Kabir, I don't think anyone has a problem with you being Indian (your race/ nationality), but your beliefs are quite another matter.
Why do you seek to defend Islam so strongly when it is patently obvious it is the motivation for almost all the terrorism in the world and over 50 "honour" killings of women, every year, here in Britain alone?
Also, where Sharia operates without hindrance, elsewhere in the world, homosexuals are routinely persecuted and even murdered in the most barbaric ways. Do you support this? If not, then have the guts to say so and condemn your fellow Muslims who do this.
If you do, then life in Britain, a free, liberal, tolerant and democratic nation, is not for you. Kindly return to India.
Like most Muslims, you seem to be excusing, or turning a blind eye to the evils of your fellow Muslims, while criticising the native people of this country simply for defending their hard won freedoms and way of life.
Other non-indigenous people have managed to adapt to Western ways successfully - perhaps you just need to try a little harder?

Kabir, the word "Islam" does have several meanings, but its chief one is "submission" or "surrender" (to Allah). Seems it comes from the Arabic verb "aslama", meaning just that. You can hardly claim that it's peaceful when its adherents take to the streets and kill people over a few cartoons, as happened a couple of years ago over the Jyllands-Posten cartoons. This is not to say there aren't peaceful Muslims, but you don't often (if ever) hear any of them protesting about the treatment of gays and apostates and women and petty thieves in Islamic countries, atrocities carried out by their "brothers", do you? Once I see an Islamic march through London protesting against, say, the hanging of gay men in Iran, I might begin to be persuaded.
